Roof Repairs Appeal Update.
19th November 2008.
The appeal has raised a magnificent £950 by donations from members of the Friends of Kirk Hallam Church. Many thanks to you all. There is a separate appeal to the congegation.
The roof is leaking and the buckets are out to catch the drips. So, along with some other work, the whole of the north nave roof is to be stripped and re-fitted with new laths and a breathable membrane. All the serviceable slates will be re-used plus some best second hand Westmoreland slates to make up. Scaffold access will be erected inside the church. The quote is £8,000.
As a Friend of the church your main interest may be in the maintenance of the churchyard. However the church is what makes a churchyard different from a cemetery and makes it what it is. Will you please send any donation you may wish to make to
Roof Repairs, The Vicarage, 71 Ladywood Road, Kirk Hallam, Ilkeston, DE7 4NF.
Alan Boswell, Hon Treasurer, October 2008
The Friends of Kirk Hallam Church began at a public meeting in the (then) Church Hall, Kenilworth Drive, on Tuesday 10th January 1995. Clearance of the churchyard started on Saturday 4th March 1995. A leaflet was delivered to every house in Kirk Hallam inviting subscriptions and donations to support the fledgling Friends. A leaflet from the Friends of Chesterfield Parish Church gave us early guidance.
As well as the work done in the churchyard, in 1998 the Friends produced a very well-received booklet to mark the 700th anniversary of the first recorded vicar at the Church. Friends were also involved in the planning, presentation and finance of the Millennium event; they routinely help at the annual garden party.
